I just think it would take a ton of work and there's no simple solution for this.
Why do you need customers to be able to add products? Do you really want anonymous users to have that much control?

Agreed-
It's not ideal, but you just have to add any info for the specific store in the theme itself -- i.e. hard code it 
It sucks, but it's the most straight forward way I can think of to make sure content displays for one site and not another.

I had the same issue. I used firebug to edit the box and put an absolute link to an image in there -- when the image appeared, it was clickable and brought me to the image manager.
