Unfortunately a year too late, although I did solve the speed issues by modding it myself.
Just unfortunate that it's not a scalable cart!

Thanks for that, in this case I didn't need to improve the search, just include descriptions each time. The descriptions on the site only include a tiny amount of detail so full text searches etc aren't really needed.

Thanks for that suggestion; I just can't see customers waiting round that long? I'm looking forward to some sort of fix with this; although other carts don't always offer category search from the search bar so might just live without it. My other option is only allowing search breakdown into the top...

Not really, but then that's only for the side menu isn't it? Have to admit I did not consider disabling that one to start with. I find it's fine everywhere except the dropdowns, which was solved by simply taking out the processing. I did try just removing it from the template first but then realised...
