Starting from v2.x releases of OC, simply use the template switcher extension to avoid on having to rename manually all the codes in the TWIG files. The provided extension does not reflect the extension controllers, languages and model files but only reflects on the theme and template files which means that the PHP codes being used inside the TPL files can remain there but the TPL files needs to be renamed accordingly into TWIG files in order to work which still save you some time when using the v3.x releases. 
Although, working on the other way around from TWIG over TPL files will not work.
