Can anyone tell me where I might find the right css entry for changing the background color of the top slideshow or banner container?
I've change my overall BG color which left a white box around my static banner on the home page. I have searched the web and the css file for hours and cant come up with a remedy. Watched video after video, and none of them seem to mention that container background.

Since top banner is a JPG image, color of background is defined by this image. It's not transparent, so changing anything in CSS won't give you anything. So just change the background of your image.

Thanks for the reply thekrotek. I made the image a 24bit PNG file when I created it for this purpose. And gave it a transparent background at that time. I did that because the image is a capsule shape and I didnt want the square edges.
But even after uploading it in png format, opencart places my capsule shaped image inside of a white box.

It looks like it may be referred to as owl-wrapper, or banner0. None the less I cannot figure out how to lose the white background on it.
It has to be an incredibly easy thing to do because over half of the featured sites I look at, have a large image at the top with no white background at all. And there are many different sizes.

Your PNG most likely was converted to JPG. Check the banner image link and see, if it was.

I thought of that too. But it was a PNG when I check the source and the image link.
I DID however go back and convert it to a jpeg so that I could make the transparent part of the image, the same color as my store BG in hopes to give the image BG the transparent "look".
THAT worked a little bit, but there's still a white box around the image. It's not as big as it was before I colored the BG of the image, but it's still there.

The easiest way to find the element, which has wrong background, is to use Firebug or your browser's object inspector. Just right-click the white background and select Inspect Element or something like that. You'll see the element and its styles. Either this element or his parent/child element is your target.

Found it!
catalog/view/javascript/jquery/owl-carousel Thanks thekrotek
I've made a custom version of the carousel css file to accommodate my changes, and now I want to call it by writing an xml for Vqmod.
Any ideas which file calls for the owl.carousel.css file??

There're 3 of'em:

catalog\controller\extension\module\banner.php
catalog\controller\extension\module\carousel.php
catalog\controller\extension\module\slideshow.php

Remove "extension" from the path if your OC version is below 2.3
