How to edit email templates

I would like to edit the wordings of the emails sent to the registered users upon registration, order placement and updates. How do I do this? Looking forward to some help from this Forum.

Edit language files. (usualy mail language files are located in language/mail/ )

I'd also like to edit the email templates. However, I'd like to add a couple of images that serve as links to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

I realise that this can be done using the HTML template extensions available. However, I'd like to avoid the cost associated with those if possible, but can't find anything in the forums - so any help much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
