Apache mod-rewrite info for a complete novice
Hi everyone.
This is my first post.
I'm trying to change the url's on my website, I'm using version 1.5.2.1
I selected yes in settings to use SEO URL's, changed the file name from htacess.txt and I'm getting an HTTP 404 error.
I see that I'm supposed to have the apache module mod-rewrite installed.
I am an absolute novice, so have no idea what the apache module mod-rewrite is, or what to do with it.
Can anyone help? Please try to explain as though I'm either a very young child or a very old man :-)
Thanks,
Parker

Hi Parker
Firstly welcome to the forums!
Depending on your hosting, you will probably not have access to enable this. First and foremost, have you correctly named the file. It should be
Note the . at the start. Please don't be offended by this question, as many people make this mistake, especially novices
Second question, is the store in a subfolder on the domain? If yes, make sure you set up the RewriteBase value so that it reads
If everything so far seems correct, are you sure that you're on an Apache server? The best advice I can give for all of this is to go to your hosting company. They should offer you all the support you need in getting this working
Kind regards
Jay

Re: Apache mod-rewrite info for a complete novice
Thanks for your fast reply Jay.
I'm definitely on an Apache server, I just checked that out.
As for the file, I'm a little confused. I changed it to ".htaccess" and I got the error code no matter what, but as soon as I changed it to ".htaccess." it worked. It that right?
I'm really sorry. I don't really understand anything. It took me a day to finally work out how to list a product and then another week to work out how to publish the site.
I work in an office too, so know my way around a computer, but this just confuses the life out of me.
I think my store is in a sub folder. What do you mean by RewriteBase? What is it and what do I do? I'm really sorry for being so vague.
Thanks,
Parker

Just wanted to add about the above.
When I say I got the error code and then that the website worked, this was tried with use SEO URL's turned both on and then off. It only worked when I added the "." after .htaccess and with use SEO URL's off.
I hope that makes sence.
Thanks,
Parker

RewriteBase is in the .htaccess file
note that .htaccess. as you have said is INCORRECT and won't work
Check with your hosting if it doesn't work

Re: Apache mod-rewrite info for a complete novice
Ok.
After many calls to my hosting company (Fasthost) I've finally got the file renamed to .htaccess without my website creating the error code! They also told me the apache mod rewrite was enabled.
I selected yes on the administration page to use SEO URL's, but whenever I try to open a page, category or anything other than the home page, I get th error.
My hosting company has looked int this, but cannot find a cause, so said to try here again.
Could someone please help as it's driving me crazy and I need to have SEO URL's this week as I have a 2nd meeting with my marketing manager who told me I needed them set up and to be running Google analytics by then, but I seem to be going backwards.
Please remember I have no experience with anything other than Microsoft office etc... So I need any info in plain English :-)
Thanks,
Parker

Hi Parker
Firstly, I don't rate FH at all to be honest. Used them a couple of years ago, and they have a lot to learn considering the size of their company
Can I just check, are you actually using Linux or a Windows hosting package from them?
Kind regards
Jay

Re: Apache mod-rewrite info for a complete novice
Hi Jay.
I found that out with my very lengthy phone call to them. I actually heard pages being turned as though they had a manual in front of them!
I'm using Linux. I told them that I wanted to set up an online store and this was recommended.
I spoke to someone a last night and they said it could be the text in a php file? Not really sure what they meant, but they said to post it on here and someone would understand.
Thanks,
Parker
