How do I create or modify a template?

Hey, I was looking at the forum, but I could not find how to create or modify a template; I wish I could make my own template for my store. I found some templates and I have placed, but I would have a customized.

Copy the default folder from catalog/template/ and rename it to something else
now its created.

Now you can modify the tpl files in the content folder. They are named for the areas they modify. same with the css

Please could you tell me where I can locate "the default folder from catalog/template"? Is it under admin/catalog??
I am just installed it and it's totally new to me. Thanks
