I'm trying to pick the best ecommerce software for our business. I have to chose between Prestashop or Opencart. Prestashop seems to have more admin backend options, which is good. However Opencart is more customizable.
Now, can opencart handle 10,000 categries and large business sales properly?
This has been asked a few times before and the answer is always the same
It depends on your server setup. Large sites need high performance servers, it's as simple as that
Also note that no software really comes set up for a certain performance based on product/category counts, but needless to say you'll need to get a developer to help you make it as efficient as possible

You are correct in the sense that its made for small business and does lack many functions. Many modules on the website aren't even working properly. The community is small so can't blame. It will take years to develop.
I must add that if developers will start devoting more time into OpenCart, in couple of years, it can be the most popular one. Need like 10 programmers or more to work on it. Its hard for one or two people to work on such a project for free. However, I'm thankful for their work.

Admin product filter by category
- and include JAY6390's amendment a posting or two lower down. I use it, it's good. It should work on 1.4.9x.

Opencart has been used for large stores
