I was wondering if there is any way to add a discount to ALL of the products in the shop, which will show up on all of the product listings (homepage and when you click into a product), preferably with the old price crossed out, rather than tediously add the discounts one at a time.

I am using version 1.4.8

Sarah.

It's possible to do, what sort of discount are you wanting to do? a standard decrease in price or a percentage decrease?
You'll need to create a loop, get a list of all products, and then put a discount into the product_discount table with the amount you want for them, and all the relevant information

A loop is a programming construct used to manipulate a group of values when there is a repetitive task that needs performing such as yours

Or a simply Auto-Discount mod just gives a discount off the entire cart

Can this only be used for applying discount at the end of sale rather than being displayed on the homepage?

it doesn't reflect on each price. it only shows in the total

Product A - $10.00
Proudct B - $20.00

Subtotal: $30.00
DISCOUNT: -$10.00
Shipping: $5.00
Total: $25.00
