Okay, now it is clear.

1. here for the future (may help): http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/
2. Options:
* Language Name -> German (e.g.)
* Code -> de
* Locale -> de (same as Code above)
* Image -> de.png (name of the language flag)
* Directory -> german (where your language files are - no further path)
* Filename -> german
Finally: here is the documentation: http://www.opencart.com/index.php?route ... n/language

1. IF you do NOT need the German language DISable it
2. if you NEED it, get the German language package here and install it

This message comes up if NO (additional, beside english) language package is installed.
The reason why it is showing on a clean OC installation: the developer made an mistake with the 1.4.0.0 release and left some in the database -> read here: http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php ... 120#p44882!

The German files must be in the folder you specified in the config (e.g. german).
Or which error is visible?

Guess have given the language another name ...

Check following:

1. language folder in admin AND catalog MUST have the same name (e.g. german)
2. open your database (e.g. with phpMyAdmin) and check the value directory in table language (must be the same as you named the folders)

IF all 3 conditions are the same (!!), it should work.

Hello, i have the same problem. I checked all 3 of the above and that's how they are in the DB (and admin).
I even tried copying the english version in catalog AND admin and rename the folder, the file and just change the main php file to reflect the code. Still doesn't work.
Any advices?

I too have a issue with my translation it was downloaded from the official page, and I get this text weird displayed everywhere it has a decima value:

80decimal_point00€ 100decimal_point00€
Ex Tax: 80decimal_point00€

Anyone knows how to fix this?

I am always wondering how many users are doing - and how wrong!
Because it is that easy, just read here > German Official Language Package
