CSS changes not working on website

Edit: Changes have gone through on delay again, I'll not need any further help as the max width change was the primary focus, thank you.
Hello, I'm running opencart 1.5.4. I don't usually work with coding, I'm just trying to make some basic changes so please forgive my lack of knowledge. I've searched for a few days now and seen many different threads but still cannot find a solution.
My webpage isn’t showing the code changes that I’ve made to it. For example I change the writing colours tand it doesn’t change, and the first colour change to purple took place after a few days.
The main reason I ask is because my cPanel css code shows images at max-width:100% however inspect elements all show max-width: auto which is a problem because now it’s not responsive. I’ve tried restoring previous versions, several browsers with no cache, different machines etc. Can anyone think why it’s not changing?
