extending background image 1.4.0

I'm currently using defaultdarkcolour template and changed the background colour to suit however it runs out half way down my page if there is more content displayed, I did extent the image to 800px but its still not enough. Is there a way to extend it within the code or do I just have to over size the repeating image?

I have a feeling I have to change the whole background behind the image but unsure where the line is.

It seems I may have covered up the problem by extending my background image to 1800px, probably overkill and in coding terms incorrect but seems to work for the moment, now my top tabs seem to be floating away from their anchor... Ummm
