If you do not have much products to feature, why not use the HTML module to add some text to the home page instead?
You could easily just redirect the homepage to a certain product with your .htaccess

You can follow opencart standard development process -
Using OCMOD , you can place redirection code in to home.php file which can be found in catalog\controller\common\ directory.
Also, alternate solution is already given by @paulfeakins
