Setup of email has a drop down of either mail or smtp. If you choose mail it still uses smtp and on certain hosting providers smtp does not work or there is a flaw in the smtp code.
I use Wordpress, Webtrees and Joomla and they are all configured with "mail" and it works. Opencart does not.
Email notifications are a basic function of a shopping cart. I do not want to buy a plugin which changes the mail.php in /system/library which wraps it in mail, that is just backwards. I worked with straightlight for quite a bit and could not get it going.
I hope you will consider a modification so the code works as I would think it was intended.

Addition:
I just installed cubecart, see screenshot email setup, first click of the test button and email arrived. How it should be.
