Ok I'm trying to use PayPal standard with my site, but I'm thick or something. The only thing to set up in OpenCart is your email. Does something have to be done in PayPal. Am I using an API of theirs that's already installed? I need to use PayPal only until I set up Square. any help would be appreciated.

Ok, I'm finding out there's a little more to it. I have to use SSL for the Square API. My hosting has a shared SSL for email, not domains. I have to get an SSL certificate I can buy one from my hosting provider but this will take a little time for me to get up to speed.

You would also need a SSL certificate for PayPal Standard. Otherwise your store won't receive the payment notifications. It's recommended that all sites that collect personal data use a SSL certificate anyway.

I'm currently setting this up for a few clients. To avoid errors get an SSL and make sure that the email address used in the Paypal Standard payment module is the same as the primary email address on your Paypal account. If not you get he mismatch error in your error logs. On 1.5 based sites you might also get Curl errors which I'm seeing quite a lot of.

You can use the IPN/Callback URL feature in Paypal if you want. I never do.

I went to express check out and it seemed to work, however, I found out I needed a certificate for Square, which is my primary. My host was IX WebHosting, but they were bought out and everything was transferred to Site5 before I was playing with Opencart. I tried to ask them about SSL certificates, but support is seriously lacking. The only way to talk to support was though live chat which wasn't working. I got so pissed that I opened and account with another web host and am in the process of transferring my website. My new host does a cpanel to cpanel transfer and an SSL certificate is included.

That's good. You can transfer SSL certificates from host to host if you need to. Cpanel is absolutely brilliant. I always recommend that my clients get hosting with it installed. TSO Host are my first choice and have been for years.
