How would i go about adding information/images/SSL certificates to the side

Do i alter the theme, or how do i go about doing this?

You have some space on the left hand side, so a suggestion would be to edit catalog/view/theme/YOUR_THEME/template/common/column_left.tpl. Perhaps place the link to the image just before the </div> - see what you think.
