SKU = stock keeping unit

I wouldn't recommend using it for the items identifier, use the Model for "real models" or MPN for real international unit data. This is what all the feeds need, search engines prefer. SKU is a "make up whatever you want" data, and they mostly ignore it.

So an item might look like so:
  • Model = The REAL model from the MFG (its different from MPN most of the time), this is the general purpose identifier
  • SKU = The FAKE/WAREHOUSING tracker, bin pick, etc - its an arbitrary number. Some folks clone model here. Most apps ignore these
  • MPN = The REAL unique and globally registered manufacturer part number (its different from model most of the time), do not fake them
  • UPC = The REAL internationally assigned 12 digit UPC - you have to register for these, do not fake them

You mean the number that you give your suplier when you send in a PO? If thats the case, SKU is perfect for order number since its a "backend stock/item number" that exists from supplier.

And UPC is a barcode, so its like on the box. This is what retail stores like Walmart scan with the laser thing when youre paying. Unless youre a manufacturer or high level distributor you dont need to worry about registering these....they should already be there on applicable items. If you are becoming a mfg/distributor and branding stuff and want a UPC on the box you can check out the spec here: http://www.gs1us.org/

That extension is ok if you dont try to bend it.

That extension makes a visual barcode from whatever you enter into the UPC field. If you enter fake UPC numbers it could generate a fake barcode. A UPC is generated based on "widespread standards" and is sent across a UPC network. Part of the digits represent your business as UPC ID, and the other part represent the product itself. When the barcode is scanned it says "ok this is AcmeInc selling a Widget model 2345" related to retailer identifier model+sku+price+qty. So if you arent registered, and just make up numbers, it would be fake and not good or could collide with real UPC :)

The moral is: Never mess with or spoof UPC or MPN -- always use the MFG suggested numbers for these. If they dont exist, its better they are blank. Model is the prefered public identifier, followed by SKU for your private in-house or ordering needs.
