The install.txt file indicates that Opencart 3 should be installed at the web root level, i.e. public_hmtl/. Will the Opencart still work if it loaded into a separate folder? E.g. public_html/oc3/.

I will be using Opencart for checkout only and I am trying to avoid dueling index.php files.

Sure you can, but you then also have the add the Shop Sub Name to the
.htaccess file,
as shown below, if your Shop Software is located in the /shop/ Subdirectory,
after rewriting both config.php content, to link to the /shop/ Subdirectory as well.
