Bulk Update Stock Status With Special Category ID

Hi everyone,
What is the best way to bulk update the stock status of products with a special category ID? As the holidays are approaching there are certain items that will not be available until then from my website. However, I do want to have the products to be viewable with the stock status (custom) ' Black Friday.' I have set up the custom stock status. When I first make my new inventory entry it works out fine, then I update my inventory (just to double check) and it switches the stock status back to "out of stock" since the inventory number is 0.
Is this an opencart issue or something beyond it?
