would it be better to translate 'Order history' with Bestellverlauf ? if so then a few other words would need to get translated, meaning Auftragsnummer -> Bestellnummer etc.
- It would also be nice to have the default return options already translated

Has nothing to do with this translation, because these items are stored in the database.
Edit each item, translate - and store.

Well, you could change such Names into anything you like, possibly even
by use of the OC v.3 built-in Language Editor, but I am not familiar with all this.

This looks really promising.
I added one entry in the language editor to test this.
Language = German, Route = account/return, key = text_date_ordered, value = Bestelldatum
then I click in the footer menu the 'Returns' in German
But the 'Order Date' text is not changing.
Is there anything else that needs to be done?

Today I translated more text, mostly extension-payment-cheque and extension-payment-bank_transfer. These translations work fine in the webstore. There is an additional bug regarding the language-editor described here viewtopic.php?f=201&t=199069
