problem with setting up a multi store using sub domain

Hi,

I am still using OC 2.3X, I added a new subdomain in cpanel and using the same folder of my primary store as root directory. eg store2.mydomain.com
Then I added a new store in OC's admin panel/system/settings/, both Store URL and SSL URL are http://store2.mydomain.com/ and https://store2.mydomain.com/ respectively.

when I enter the newly added store, it just loads the primary store instead which is http://www.mydomain.com/
I logged into public_html folder using FTP program and found that the new "store2" folder is empty.

What have I done wrong? please kindly advise, very appreciate!!! cheers.
