Does opencart support "talking" to remote MYSQL databases using encrypted connections ? I'm referring to "require_secure_transport = on" setting of the remote MYSQL database server.

Better to use v3.x releases with the use of the backward compatibility via the recent built-in API system.

For password usage, it does support SHA1 with multiple versions of Opencart.

I took the time to lookup the Github repo of Opencart, and saw how the the db connections get established. From what I saw, I don't think it can create secure connections to remote databases using SSL encryption. I will test by trying a clean installation of OC2.1.0.2.
Database cannot establish connections via SSL. Which is why, as mentioned above, it is rather best to use REST API rather than local database if you wish to establish secured communications to request and obtain values.
