unable to enable SEO URL in opencart 2.3.0.2

hello,
I have a brand new opencart installed 2 weeks ago and I am now stuck when trying to enable SEO URL
the steps I followed were:

1. enable SEO url in settings- server
2. delete .htaccess in cpanel since I have both .htaccess and .htaccess.txt
3. rename.htaccess.txt to .htaccess.
4. now when I go to my site and admin both shows the message "PHP5.4+ Required" and I can't do anything except to restore the two old files in cpanel.

Any solution or input are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

did you make copies, or take a look onto the both .htaccess files,
before probably deleting the wrong one?

yes, I did backup both files and trying different methods, but no success so far.
