Syntax Error on upgrade from 1.5 to 2.2

When I click continue to upgrade to the current version from 1.5 this is the error I receive:

SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data OK

Any help would be appreciated.

The mysql extension is deprecated and will be removed in the future

just search for the Text as quoted above, and you will find plenty of results on such !
