Web hosts. Who's good and who to avoid

Re: Best Hosting Site??

I'm sorry.. I'm biased i know.. I've actually never had them as a server host myself, I do use them for my domain hosting, only because they are big and popular and I don't think they will be out of business any time soon. My last domain registrar changed ownership and I had to move the domain so I moved here to avoid it again.

But my biggest gripes that I've seen with clients that I've helped are:
- It's not cpanel. cpanel is like the google of the website admin world... everyone uses it. It's fast and intuitive. Godaddy is designed for newbies, it also uses too much ajax and it slows it down.
- Actions are not instant. I guess maybe it is for easier manangement, but things like creating databases has this 5 min delay while it is "processing". When I'm doing dev work I don't want to wait.
- I've heard there are issues with certain ports. CanadaPost uses port 30000 which I guess doesn't work on GoDaddy. Also Paypal IPN callbacks have been reported to have issues.
- Godaddy's checkout system is atrocious. It pains me to buy a new domain just because of the gauntlet you must click through to checkout.
- Also rumors that early on they blocked googlebot from crawling their hosted sites, preventing google from listing your site.

These are enough bad marks in my mind to not think to highly of them. I use hosts like hostgator that get me up and running quickly and intuitively with no red tape or BS so I'm just used to sites like that.

For The Netherlands:

Good:
Virtual Dynamix Webdolutions (VDX)
Great support, will actively search for solutions and not just point the issue towards the script(s) you use.

Avoid:
Trans-ip, will blame the script when issues found and their statement will be: We do not support third party scripts. :-X

Had some trouble with them a year ago. They've made a lot of changes since and I have no complaints.

I use hostgator now. Fast reply for technical support and easy to config for opencart. Godaddy not easy to deal with.

From UK

Good:
Easyas ABC Hosting
Great service and uptime, can host many scripts etc.

Avoid:
Scarletbeach Hosting, they will take your money then after a few months they will develop a hard drive crash on the server, theny will move all your accounts to a new server and give you new nameserver IPs, then a few days later they will suffer another hard drive crash, but this time they will not reply to any communications, their site will suddenly have a suspended site page taking all your sites and files with them, their site will be gone for about 3 months and then suddenly reappear. they will do this several times a year

What if you want a VPS account?

Do you still like Hostgator for VPS or is just good for shared?

Have you tried Arvixe for a VPS ? (their banner is posted here on oc)

I've been designing and hosting websites for 15 years. After trying a variety of different hosts, I've come to the conclusion that hostgator hands down is the best. Why?

Affordable Rates
Unlimited Bandwidth and Disk space
99.9% uptime
Cpanel

They have a special right now for $10 off with this coupon: 10OFF52316

Hi all! Please help me with one simple question: I'll try to host my OpenCart shop on Hostgator (near 15000 products and near 500-1000 visitors per day). Can you tell me, which hosting plan will be the best for me? Do I need to use VPS or just Web-hosting?

I'll be realy thankfull for any of you interested in my question.

Greetings

Well, I have answer from their support:
(02:50:38 AM) Chris Mo: You should have no issues with a shared account
(02:51:58 AM) Chris Mo: I would recommend you look at either Baby or Business.

But I can't believe that it will be enough :)

I've got to raise my hand here!

I've got servers in both the US and UK and presently have quite a few OpenCart sites being hosted. From $4.49 per month, with unlimited everything. Yes, bandwidth is also unlimited.

For UK based hosting, I have found catalyst2 to be one of the better offerings for low priced hosting.

One to definitely avoid is Apthost. One of their employees put malicious code on their servers, which they stated on their own site. Sadly they didn't do a good job of cleaning it off and all the sites simply became re-infected again.

Magmahost were good until they were taken over by Yomura, then it all fell apart. :-[

I've just moved to cloud hosting, and have to say it's pretty damn good. Cost is cheap, there are plenty of tutorials on how to install a control panel etc, and you have full control over exactly what it is you want to change with it. Want to allow ssh access to an account? done. Want to set php values, remove/add restrictions etc - no problem. Granted you have to be comfortable with using the linux command line. I'm certainly no expert with it but the web is a plethora of information, so finding out how to do so is a piece of cake!

Just need to get my store back up and running now lol

At the moment I use surpasshosting.com for over a year and I can recommend this. Uptime, support and configurations are similar of HostGator but offer much more bandwith.

If you are upto managing your own VPS, and you want hosting in the UK, I'd highly recommend Xtrahost (http://www.xtrahost.co.uk/xenvps/)

I've been with them for over a year now, and had no unplanned downtime or outages, and the load on the VPS is always low, with super fast loading times for my users

Code: Select all
# uptime
 05:19:35 up 78 days,  7:57,  1 user,  load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

I like ipage because their hosts are powered by wind energy, I have a simple site so I don't really know if its fast though. I also heard good stuff about bluehost before.
