Most of the SEO discussed on the board is specific to opencart. Thought it would be good to have a thread where people can discuss SEO and Website promotion in more general terms. How to get your website out there, and how to build traffic.

I'll start. http://www.practicalseo.org/blog has a lot of good articles on SEO.

Everyone post all your good links and guides on SEO, adwords, internet advertising, etc....

Unfortunately, most on that blog are out of date. October 2013 was the latest article discussing Hummingbird when Panda and Penguin (I think) are the latest google algorithms.

I've also found that different "experts" will advise different things and it can get really, really confusing. So I suggest finding one source of info and sticking with it. I prefer http://www.moz.com as it has a lot of information and tools that can help you achieve seo results.

If you are busy building tons of back-links, worried about your keywords and pulling your hair out about SEO, shaking in your boots about thousands of competitive websites, and crying in your sleep over Google updates. Then you are not alone.

NOT recommended. such cheap seo services usually generates a bunch of spammy links back to your site. Yeah, you might see a bump in traffic temporarily, but eventually google will penalize you and your position will drop like a rock.

Developing good seo takes time. Focus on optimizing your onpage seo first, then expand to include links back to your site, social mentions, etc. Take a look at the free articles on sites like moz.com for ideas how to do this, do some keyword and potential customer research, and go.

With your niche, you have an easy way to get links - contests for the cutest x picture (baby, dog, cat, family, etc). People who love photos and are creative LOVE to share their projects. Make the contest require a hashtag and/or link back to a particular page on your site or your site in general in order to qualify for the contest. Give the winner something free (like a framed print of their winning photo or something). Feature those photos on your facebook page, set up a pinterest board for them, instagram, etc for instant, potentially viral content giving natural links back to your site.

If you want to increase fans on your facebook page, run facebook ads targeting your perfect customer (perhaps promoting the above contest?) and be sure to post interesting content regularly.

Has anyone used google product ads? (not adwords but display on what used to be froogle?)? I am thinking of trying it and just wondered if anyone had good/bad experience with it or advice?

A few tips..

1) Don't use Fiverr for SEO (If you do use fiverr make sure you know what your buying). I read many stories over at blackhat where people get penalties from google.

2) Watch the Matt Cutts Video's - He was the head of the Web-Spam team at google

3) Before you build a page for a product your selling, do some keyword research. Make sure people are actually search for the terms, then make sure you can rank those terms (keywords). If the competition is to high for them, then find different words that describe your product and rank around those.

I'm new here in the forum and I really enjoyed this post. In fact, most of the access sites, is ecommerce, blog or institutional, are Google. Investing in SEO is crucial nowadays.

Anyone can learn to do SEO. To contribute here, I suggest reading the book The Art of SEO. I found I am Brazilian, but I found the English version in http://www.artofseobook.com/

As a SEO specialist i can tell that the seo world is not like 1+1=2 but it's like 1+1=0

You have to be always connected to Google and its algorithms otherwise you can fail..maybe you can learn the on-site first related to opencart then you can jump to the next level and the hardest one which is the off-site. ;)

Sorry I'm new here, so currently I heard that google penguin had a big update with its algorithm. I have just worked on SEO recently so I'm not really sure about all its effect, though I was told that many pages lost rank dramatically due to it.
