I got the idea from Jneuhoff who did this for coupons http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?t=38173(thanks). You can have the option to use your gift voucher in step 5 of the checkout page.
It works on V1.5.0.5 don't know about others. Feel free to try it ^-^

what am i doing wrong? if the voucher is empty it still gives a succes response

No really sure what you mean... If there is no code and you press apply it say 'your voucher has be successfully applied'?

Does it give the discount?

What version are you using?

I have this running on 1.5.0.5 and 1.5.1.2 both work fine.
