Looking for new webhost

Postby JNeuhoff » Thu Jun 04, 2009 11:08 pm

I am currently with Hostgator where I keep a few sites with Opencart installed, but have run into memory limits imposed by Hostgator, in particular it won't let me use more than 64MB for the PHP process (PHP/FastCGI).

Can anyone remommend another webhost which is a bit more generours with the PHP memory_limit?

Curious: Can you run a phpinfo on your webhost site and let me know what kind of default PHP memory_limit they use? And with what kind of PHP Apache handler (Fast/CGI or Apache API)?

My webhost (Hostgator) seems to impose quite some strict 65MB memory limitation for a PHP process, which I sometimes reach.

Is this what you mean by memory limit? http://faq.1and1.com/scripting_language ... hp/16.html

You should probably know that I'm using a business package and not the developer's package or a private server. PHP5 is available but you need to drop a modified php.ini file in your directory. You are probably better off calling them and asking for specifics but don't bother with email - they never respond. Funny how that works... their phone service is excellent but they don't reply to emails... lol http://faq.1and1.com/

Hi JNeuhoff,

One of the services my company supplies is Website hosting here in the UK.

With your own custom php.ini file you can override any PHP setting, including setting the memory limit as high as 128MB if you want.

Going above 64MB is a bad idea on shared hosting though. why would a script need more than 64MB Unless the site's designed to end up on a dedicated server to be doing high end processing.

I can supply both shared and dedicated, Linux and Windows hosting but as you would expect dedicated is not cheap.

To give you an idea:
Shared Linux with MySQL, email, 24x7 support, 3X1TB pipes so no performance issues, full server and connection redundancy, unlimited bandwidth and webspace.
etc... the list goes on and on £50 + vat per year.

Checkout the phpinfo() on one of my demo servers here.

PM me if you want any more information.

Phil.

To starchy:

Thanks for the details about 1and1.

I normally never need more than a maximum 20 at the most for a normal PHP process in Opencart, often well below that, but I have one site where I import literally thousands of products to the Opencart server, and the peak memory during that process can temporarily go slightly above 64 MB. So I guess, 1and1 won't do it, unless I use VPS or dedicated server package which IMHO are overpriced in the UK.

Back in the day 1and1 used to be a bit like godaddy with their customize version of admin panels and stuff. I don't trust those types of hosting. Give me a good ol fashioned cpanel anyday

I've been using BlueHost (affiliate linked) for 5 years now and I'm very happy with them. I host all my own web sites and my clients' web sites with them. Website Magazine just ranked them #2 in best web hosts - with 1&1 as #1. I'd like to add that GoDaddy didn't even make the Top 50 list :P.

I use Liquidweb (for a US-based store). They claim 100% uptime (so far, yes) and "heroic support"; every time I have a question, I get a response within 5 minutes, day or night, and my issue is solved right away. They have cheerfully helped solve all installation problems for whatever shopping cart software I am trialing at the time. Very, very satisfied with them.
