Testing handoff from previous developer

Hi all,

Quite a few people offered me good advice about taking a client's site from a previous developer and setting this up on a new site.
I intend to check this out gradually and first wanted to check the Database and have a question whether my approach would work:

They have provided me with a zip file which contains all the directories and the database as DATABASE.sql ... this looks like a mysql dump

i have already setup my own test site for the same opencart version as they used...
so my questions are just to check the data content of the database

a) can i restore this file into my existing database?
b) do i need to empty the database? how do i do that?
c) how do i restore the database?

any help would be really gratefully received

OC version not provided. However, I would recommend to seek for professional assistance regarding the content of your database knowing if it is eligible / valid for Opencart to be used or re-used.
