Design tab - Layout Override. What does this do?

I'm on 1.5.5.1 and see under Catalog>Products and Catalog>Information there are tabs called Design, which have a drop-down selection box to override the layout.

Why would I want to override the default layout, and what would this achieve please?

It gives you a different layout in terms of assignment of modules, not in terms of a totally different page design. For example, your standard product page might use the layout "products" and you have specials module set to appear in the left column of the products layout so it shows on all product pages.

But say you do not want that specials module to show on products you have on sale. You could create a layout called "onsale" that you apply as a layout override to only those products you assign a "specials" price to. Since the specials module is NOT assigned to show on the onsale layout, it would NOT show on those products.

This will work for any modules. You could use the banner module for example to show a banner for free shipping on only those products you give free shipping for. A page content type module to show a link to a different website "For tons more x type products, visit our x store". On the example on sales layout, you could assign onsale to show a box for terms and conditions of that sale "Free shipping does not apply. Not valid with other offers or coupons" or whatever.

It gives you more flexibility as to what you display where.

OK thanks for all that labeshops.

By layout are we talking about OpenCart *.tpl templates?

Is this some sort of template override system for specific products and other parts of OC?

If so where do I create and put these layout files?

Do they need to be in any particular folder location for OC to find them?

system > design > layouts

As I said, they are NOT page designs, and NOT templates. They give you additional control over modules ONLY.

There is at least one extension that lets you select a different template for a product or category, so do a search in the extensions store. That is not what layouts do.

I have read this thread and I am a bit confused. For example I have a test site http://www.mistatees-rc.co.uk/opencart/

If I select a drop down from the main menu bar http://www.mistatees-rc.co.uk/opencart/ ... ry&path=46 I get a box called categories that I dont want to appear.

I cant seem to find out how to adjust the layout of that page.

BUT I cant seem to find documentation that explains how to adjust that sort of basic stuff.

click edit

Disable or remove it from you category layout and save.

Cheers it all makes a little more sense now.

Still got a lot to find out :) Wheres the best place to learn about images.

I have some that were imported by a module Total import pro and they show up as thumb nails but I have some listed without images (thumb nails) .

When I go into the product and the image tab there is no image link for the ones already listed.

IF I add one to the ones without a Thumb nail, whilst it puts a main image in, it does not place a thumbnail. in the
main product listing page

Ah, okay I see what you mean now.

Did you try deleting that product and redoing it? I had an issue once with a product that wouldn't let me edit it and ended up having to recreate it to fix it.
