Thanks Guys! Increasing the mysql timeout and packet size worked out! 
.
But it is quite odd for a normal account creation to take more than 30 seconds! any reason why this happens?

Peter, This error does not occur when someone tries to register using a gmail id! But this error appears only to people using other email ids like yahoo or customer email id. How could this happen? Any ideas? Thank you.

Thanks a lot for your time, peter. I tried increased the time out to 30 seconds and adding the code you suggested in my php. But, the same error is reappearing. Any idea what's going wrong? Thanks again.
