I found a solution.
For some reason, one of the modules in the extension did not get uploaded:
catalog/controller/payment/paypal_express.php
I uploaded this module and the button now links to the PayPal website login page as it should.

Thanks for the info, I was having the same problem.
Wouldn't it make more sense to set all of the initial/default order status values to their corresponding values rather than having them all default to "canceled"?
